The events of the past several weeks, and the beginning of
recovery efforts from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, should serve as a wake up
call for California. If a mass natural disaster can happen in our Gulf States,
it can happen here. Many California cities are just as (if not more) vulnerable
to the effects of a natural disaster as are those affected by these hurricanes.
In fact, according to FEMA statistics, since 1964 California has been one of
the most frequent recipients of Presidential disaster declarations. Given this
reality I think it important for all school psychologists to consider what they
can do to better ensure that their schools are ready for mass disaster.
First and foremost, it will be important for school
psychologists to advocate for the development
