My year as President of CASP began on Monday July 1, 2002. I spent the day with my wife Jill, exploring Loud’s Island, a remote and beautifully isolated island located several miles off the mid-coast of Maine. Without electricity and beyond the reach of a cell phone, email, or the Internet, the three days I spent on the island would be the only time during my term of office that I would spend away from the politics of IDEA, and the consequent challenges that would become central in my life for the next 12 months.
