Three people were killed and three seriously wounded by a mental health patient in Nevada City, California, on January 10, 2001. A patient being treated at a local community mental health clinic walked into the main reception area and opened fire on the receptionist, a 19-year-old college student, killing her and then critically wounded the office manager. He then shot through a locked door, killing a 63-year-old family care worker on the other side. A clinician who heard the shots jumped from a third story window, seriously injuring herself. The gunman then left and drove about 4 miles to a local restaurant that he thought was poisoning
