Call for Entries: Scientist-Practitioner Grant Guidelines for Preparation and Submission

CASP encourages proposals that address areas of concern regarding the educational and mental health needs of children and youth. Proposals are encouraged regarding practices with direct relevance to the practice of school psychology, and/or school reform efforts that promote positive results for students.

Deadline: April 1st

Proposals may request up to $1,500. The money can be used in a variety of ways, including:

  • Purchasing materials, equipment, software or other data collection or analysis tools;
  • Reimbursing research assistants for help with data collection;
  • Reimbursing subjects for their assistance or participation in a study;
  • Obtaining clerical assistance;
  • Reimbursing experts for consultation regarding any aspect of the project;
  • Travel; and other expenses.

Award Criteria

Applicants must be CASP members in good standing. Absolute priority will be given to practicing school psychologists. (Projects may have more than one applicant, but the primary author should be a practicing school psychologist who is a regular member of CASP.)

1. Proposals must identify an area of school practice that is of significant interest to their own school community, with implications for the broader educational community. Proposals will be evaluated according to how the topic reflects membership interests and contemporary issues in the practice of school psychology.

2. Proposals should focus on an aspect of practice that can be related to improving student outcomes, or to improving the practice of school psychology.

3. Proposals should involve research projects that can be completed within a 12-month period. Support may be requested for the analysis of data that has already been collected, or the collection of new data.

4. Successful applicants must agree to present the results of the project at a CASP annual convention, and submit a paper regarding the results of the project for publication in CASPTODAY or The California School Psychologist.

Application Procedure

1. Applicants should submit five (5) copies of their proposals that must include the following:

  • A cover sheet, including the name, phone number, CASP membership status and professional affiliation of the primary author;
  • A proposal summary, including each of the following sections:
    • the question to the studied,
    • the relevance of the question to the practice of school psychology,
    • the implications of the project for the improvement of educational practices for children,
    • A summary of the methods for conducting the study (i.e., single case subject design, satisfaction survey of participants, use of existing test scores, etc.)
    • administrative support for the project (i.e., has your principal, district director of research, etc. formally or informally approved the study?)
    • a timeline for project completion, and
    • a budget for the expenditure of all requested money.
2. Proposal summaries should not exceed 8 pages (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font), and be appropriately formatted using current APA guidelines. The author(s) name(s) and professional affiliation should appear only on the cover sheet, and not on the proposal summary itself.

3. Proposals must be postmarked by April 1st. All proposals will be evaluated during a blind review process by CASP Research Committee Members. All applicants will be notified regarding the success of their proposals by July 1st.

4. A plan for disbursement of funds will be developed with each successful applicant. Initial support will be available by July 1st.

5. Please send all proposals to the CASP Office, 1400 K Street, Suite 311, Sacramento, CA 95814, to the attention of Kristin Powers, Research Committee Chair.

If you have any questions about this initiative, or need assistance with your proposal, contact Brian Leung, CASP Research Chair at bleung@lmu.edu.
