How to get your School District to Fund your Convention Fees

School districts throughout the state have received money from the federal government through the American Recover and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Some of these funds are earmarked specific for special education. This money can be used for a variety of things, including continuing professional development. In the past, most districts have not been able to fund participation in professional development activities. This year, many districts are using the ARRA funds to support attendance at professional development activities.

It is suggested that school psychologists approach their directors of special education to recommend using this money to support attendance at the 2010 CASP convention in Santa Clara. When asking a director for this type of support, the requestors of the funds should develop a plan on disseminating the information learned at the convention to the rest of the district staff in an effort to increase capacity in the district. It is the strength to build expertise within the district that would be attractive to a director. Without this commitment to teach other educators in the district, it is unlikely that funding would be provided. We would recommend that you consider how you would develop a plan that would be beneficial for both the school psychologist and the district, prior to requesting the funds.
