School Crisis Prevention, Response and Intervention Basic Requirements
All those applying for the Certificate of Advanced Training and Specialization must provide documentation of the following:
• Valid School Psychology Credential.
• Two years (full-time equivalent) practice as a School Psychologist.
Additional Requirements
1. Documentation of at least 15 hours of post credential training in the following areas (minimum of 3 hours in each area):
• Self- and other-directed violence risk assessment
• Self- and other-directed violence prevention
• Safe, effective, and responsive schools
• School crisis response preparedness
• Comprehensive school crisis response
The above listed training requirements can be met in a variety of ways. Documentation of attendance at conferences and other training workshops with appropriate content will be accepted. Applicant must have attended the training within the last five years. Questions regarding the appropriateness of strategies for meeting the proposed training requirements should be directed to the CASP Crisis Intervention Specialist.
2. Attendance at one required, multi-day workshop, designed and sponsored by CASP, to fulfill specialization requirements (within 12 months of application). This workshop will be offered at selected CASP workshops or conferences.
3. Submission of school safety, crisis preparedness, and response documents. See the application form for more information regarding these documents.
- Successful completion of a written examination designed to document understanding of basic crisis intervention principles. Content of this exam will be drawn from the CASP-sponsored School Crisis Prevention, Response and Intervention workshop. A committee, chaired by the CASP Crisis Intervention Specialist, will review documentation of training; safety, preparedness, and response document; and examination performance. This committee will make the determination regarding certification.
Certificates and Privileges
Certificates will be awarded following completion of all requirements. Re-certification is required every 5 years, and will require documentation of continued professional development in the areas of school crisis prevention, response, and intervention. CASP members who obtain this certification will be eligible for consideration for inclusion on the California Crisis Response Team. Lead by the CASP Crisis Intervention Specialist, this team provides direct crisis intervention, consultation support, and training programs to California schools confronting crisis situations.
CASP will maintain a directory of individuals who obtain a certificate in this specialty area and will make it available by request to individuals, school districts, and administrators.
Fees
A fee of $175.00 for CASP members, $200 for nonmembers will be payable to CASP upon submission of the CATS application. The fee does not include the cost of the required CASP-sponsored School Crisis Prevention, Response & Intervention workshop.
