2008 State Budget - FAQs

Current State Education Budget Updates
What We Know:
  • On January 10th, Governor Schwarzenegger presented his proposed State Budget to the State Legislature. With an estimated $14 billon dollar deficit looming, the Governor and his advisors have recommended that the state reduce spending rather than raise taxes. The proposal is likely to go through many changes from now until the end of June when the Legislature is constitutionally required to have passed the coming year’s State Budget.
  • The proposed spending cuts come in the form of a 10% cut to all state agencies. This includes a $4.4 billon dollars reduction to be shared by the K-14 public education sector. Such a cut would require a suspension of Proposition 98. On a per-pupil basis $4.4 billon is a decrease of approximately $100 per student from $8,558 in 2007-08 to $8,458 in 2008-09.
  • The cut would also impact special education by cutting $357.9 million that would include the elimination of the COLA and a reduction in state funding which would have to be offset by local LEAs.
