John P. Hoffman, the Director of Pupil Personnel Services for Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) provided an update on the UCLA Center for Mental Health Comprehensive Pupil Learning Support System model during the CASP Board of Directors’ Retreat in August.

The model provides a global model for school districts in the redesign of their student support systems. Comprehensive learning support is established when policy and practice are developed into a system that weaves together school and community resources. Hoffman expounded on his experiences working at HBUHSD and at Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), where he served as senior psychologist.

Mr. Hoffman reviewed many of the challenges facing school psychologists and others when they attempt to introduce the model’s principles to the school setting. From school-site program changes to policy overhaul
