Research Review: School-Associated Violent Deaths in the United States, 1994-1999

On December 5, 2001, the Journal of the American Medial Association (JAMA) published what is reported to be the only systematic investigation of the trends and features of all recent school-associated violent deaths in the United States. Contained within this study are data that all educators interested in school safety and violence prevention need to have. Titled “School-Associated Violent Deaths in the United States, 1994-1999,” the study’s authors included representatives from the CDC and Departments of Education and Justice (Anderson et al., 2001). In this research “school-associated violent deaths” were defined as homicide, suicide, legal intervention (victim killed by police officer in the line of duty), or unintentional firearm-related death, which occurred between July 1, 1994, and June 30, 1999, in one of the following locations:
